Old Rag Mountain
A beloved Blue Ridge summit famous for its thrilling granite boulder scramble and sweeping 360-degree Shenandoah Valley views.
About this spectacle
Old Rag Mountain in the Blue Ridge of Virginia offers one of the most celebrated day hikes in the eastern United States. The ridge trail winds through a gauntlet of massive granite boulders, demanding hand-and-foot scrambling through narrow passages, under overhangs, and over exposed slabs. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views across the Shenandoah Valley, the Piedmont foothills, and rolling layers of forested ridgeline stretching to the horizon. In autumn the surrounding hardwood forest erupts in amber and crimson, making the panorama especially vivid. Spring brings wildflowers along the lower slopes. The rock scramble section is viscerally engaging — wind rushes through the boulder maze, and the rough texture of ancient granite underfoot gives a satisfying sense of physical challenge earned. The descent via the fire road offers a quieter, reflective close to the loop.
