Old Faithful & Upper Geyser Basin Season — Yellowstone

Old Faithful is the world's most famous geyser and the centrepiece of the Upper Geyser Basin — the largest concentration of geysers on Earth, with over 500 active geysers in a 2.5-square-kilometre area including the astonishing Grand Geyser, which erupts for 9–12 minutes reaching 61 metres in the world's most spectacular prolonged geyser eruption. Old Faithful erupts every 60–110 minutes to heights of 30–55 metres for 1.5–5 minutes, its timing predictable within 10 minutes based on the duration of the previous eruption. The basin boardwalk in winter, when steam hangs over every vent and bison graze around the pools in -20°C conditions with geothermal warmth keeping patches of ground bare of snow, produces one of Yellowstone's most photographically extraordinary seasonal contrasts.

About this spectacle

Standing before Old Faithful as it builds to eruption, visitors feel a low rumble underfoot before a column of boiling water and steam rockets skyward — 30 to 55 metres — sustained for up to five minutes. Crowds gather on the surrounding boardwalk benches every hour or so, rewarded by a near-clockwork show. Beyond Old Faithful, the Upper Geyser Basin's 2.5 square kilometres hold over 500 active geysers, and patient visitors who wait for Grand Geyser witness the world's most spectacular prolonged eruption: 9 to 12 minutes of churning water reaching 61 metres. In winter the basin transforms entirely — steam drifts across the boardwalk in −20°C air, rainbow halos form in the mist, and bison move silently among the vents where geothermal heat keeps the ground bare of snow. Morning light catches the steam plumes beautifully in any season, but the colour-rich pools, white boardwalks, and dramatic sky contrasts make this one of the most photogenic places on Earth.
