Ófærufoss Waterfall — Iceland
A dramatic two-tiered waterfall hidden inside Iceland's vast Eldgjá volcanic canyon, reachable only in summer across rugged highland terrain.
About this spectacle
Ófærufoss is a striking waterfall tucked within Eldgjá, a vast volcanic canyon in Iceland's Southern Highlands. Visitors who make the journey are rewarded with a two-tiered cascade plunging into a dark basalt gorge, framed by rust-coloured and moss-green canyon walls. The sound of falling water echoes off the lava rock, and in summer the surrounding highland plateau blooms with cotton grass and wildflowers. A natural arch of lava rock once spanned the lower falls, though it collapsed in the early 1990s — the absence of that arch is itself a piece of living geological history. The approach crosses raw highland terrain, fording streams and traversing volcanic gravel tracks, making the arrival feel genuinely remote and earned. In clear weather, the contrast between the white cascading water, black basalt, and vivid green moss creates a scene of exceptional visual drama.
