Obersee (Berchtesgaden)
Smaller mirror lake walled by 1,000 m cliffs in Berchtesgaden NP.
About this spectacle
Obersee is a glacially carved alpine lake tucked at the foot of sheer cliffs rising roughly 1,000 metres from its shores within Berchtesgaden National Park. Visitors walk a quiet trail from the better-known Königssee, arriving to find a smaller, more intimate body of water whose surface acts as a near-perfect mirror of the towering rock walls above. The surrounding cirque creates a cathedral-like hush broken only by distant waterfalls — most famously the Röthbach Falls plunging down the cliff face at the lake's far end. The water is strikingly clear and cold, tinted deep blue-green. In summer, wildflowers line the path and the cliffs catch golden morning light. Autumn brings mist that drifts between the rock faces, adding a moody, layered atmosphere. Because access requires a boat crossing of Königssee and a short hike, the crowd level stays lower than at the main lake, giving the scene a feeling of genuine alpine seclusion.
