Ngonye Falls — Zambia
A vast horseshoe waterfall on the Zambezi deep in Zambia's Western Province — dramatic, uncrowded, and almost entirely off the tourist trail.
About this spectacle
Ngonye Falls — also known as Sioma Falls — is a sweeping horseshoe-shaped waterfall on the Zambezi River in Zambia's remote Western Province. Unlike the more famous Victoria Falls downstream, Ngonye offers a raw, uncrowded encounter with the Zambezi in full force. Visitors stand at the edge of a wide curtain of cascading white water, feeling the spray on their skin and hearing the deep roar that fills the surrounding miombo woodland. The falls are particularly dramatic during and just after the rainy season, when the Zambezi swells and the full width of the cataract is engaged. Seasonally, the riverbanks host birdlife including fish eagles, kingfishers, and herons. The sense of isolation — few tourist facilities, no crowds — gives the place a wilderness quality that feels genuinely removed from the modern world.
