About this spectacle

Multnomah Falls drops in two dramatic tiers through a basalt canyon in the Columbia River Gorge, its white ribbon of water audible before it comes into view. Visitors walk a paved path to the iconic Benson Bridge, which spans the lower falls at close range, misting the air and filling lungs with cool, forest-scented spray. Moss-covered walls rise on either side, and Douglas fir crowd the rim. A steeper switchback trail climbs to the top of the upper falls for sweeping views down the gorge. In winter, ice formations decorate the rockface; in spring, snowmelt swells the flow to its most powerful. The roar is constant, the light shifts dramatically through the day, and the scene draws visitors year-round.
