Mt Tamalpais Fog Inversion
Stand above the clouds on Mt Tamalpais as a thick sea of fog swallows San Francisco Bay, leaving the summit as a sun-drenched island.
About this spectacle
From the summit and ridgelines of Mount Tamalpais, visitors witness one of the Bay Area's most dramatic atmospheric displays: a thick, rolling sea of fog pouring through the Golden Gate and blanketing the valleys below while the mountain stands exposed in warm sunlight above. The fog layer arrives silently, filling the low terrain with a white ocean that hides San Francisco, Sausalito, and the bay while Marin's peaks emerge as islands. The contrast between the fog-choked lowlands and the clear, blue sky overhead is striking. Light plays across the fog surface, casting soft shadows and creating a sense of floating above the clouds. Wind occasionally drives the fog into churning rapids as it spills over saddles and ridgelines. The experience is visually arresting at sunrise and late afternoon, when golden light illuminates the fog's surface to spectacular effect.
