Mount Whitney Summit
The highest summit in the contiguous US, offering sweeping 360° Sierra Nevada panoramas from a wind-scoured granite peak at 14,505 feet.
About this spectacle
Standing atop Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet, visitors are immersed in a vast panorama of jagged granite ridgelines, glacially carved valleys, and the shimmering expanse of the Owens Valley far below. The summit plateau is raw and exposed — wind-scoured rock, thin air that makes every breath deliberate, and silence broken only by the occasional whistle of a marmot. On clear days the view sweeps across the Sierra Nevada to the west and out toward the Mojave Desert to the east. The ascent via the Mount Whitney Trail winds through subalpine meadows, past alpine lakes, and over switchbacks that reveal ever-broadening vistas. Sunrise from the summit casts the surrounding peaks in gold and rose hues, creating one of the most dramatic light shows in the American West. Altitude effects, including shortness of breath and fatigue, are a constant companion above treeline.
