About this spectacle

Mount Washington's summit is notorious for some of the most extreme weather on Earth. Winds regularly exceed hurricane force, fog blankets the peak for much of the year, and temperatures can plummet below freezing even in summer. Visitors who make it to the top—whether by foot, auto road, or cog railway—are often greeted by howling gusts that make it nearly impossible to stand upright, a stinging mix of cloud and ice particles, and visibility that can drop to zero within minutes. On rare clear days, panoramic views stretch across the White Mountains and into multiple states, making the contrast between calm and chaos all the more dramatic. The summit observatory provides shelter and context, while the unpredictability of conditions turns every visit into a genuine encounter with raw atmospheric power.
