Morskie Oko Lake
Poland's crown alpine lake, cradled by granite peaks in the High Tatras — a mirror of turquoise water that rewards every season's visitor.
About this spectacle
Morskie Oko, meaning 'Eye of the Sea', is the largest and most celebrated lake in the Polish Tatra Mountains. Ringed by steep granite peaks and fed by glacial meltwater, its waters shift between deep turquoise and steel-grey depending on the sky above. Visitors follow a well-worn trail through pine and spruce forest before the valley opens to reveal the lake's mirror surface reflecting the surrounding crags. In summer, wildflowers edge the shoreline and the air carries the scent of alpine meadow. In winter, the frozen lake gleams pale blue beneath snow-dusted peaks. The setting is dramatic in every season: silent and misty at dawn, brilliant under midday sun, and moody under passing storm clouds. A mountain refuge sits at the water's edge, allowing visitors to linger and absorb the scale of the surrounding Rysy massif.
