About this spectacle

Rising to dominate the Provence skyline, Mont Ventoux's summit is a stark, moon-like plateau of white limestone scree swept almost bare by relentless winds. On clear days, visitors are rewarded with an extraordinary 360-degree panorama stretching from the Alps to the Pyrenees, the Rhône Valley below, and on exceptional days as far as the Mediterranean. The ascent — whether on foot, by bicycle, or by vehicle — culminates at a communications mast that has become an iconic landmark. The wind is ever-present and often fierce, stripping the summit of vegetation and giving the 'Giant of Provence' its wild, raw character. In winter the summit vanishes under snow; in summer the bleached rock blazes under the Provençal sun. Visiting at dawn rewards with pink-lit limestone and a sea of cloud below, while late afternoon light turns the scree golden.
