About this spectacle

Monahans Sandhills State Park preserves a striking stretch of wind-sculpted sand dunes in the Permian Basin of West Texas. Visitors walk or slide across pale golden dunes that rise and fall across the landscape, with the crunch of sand underfoot and a dry desert wind as constant companions. The open sky dominates, offering sweeping views in every direction with little vegetation to interrupt the horizon. Sunsets paint the dunes in deep amber and rose tones, making late afternoon a particularly rewarding time to visit. The relative isolation means crowds are minimal, and the silence is profound outside of the rustling grasses that anchor some dune bases. Sand surfing and disk rentals make it accessible and playful for families, while photographers find compelling abstract geometry in the rippled sand textures and long shadow lines at low sun angles.
