About this spectacle

Mesa Falls in eastern Idaho offers a rare look at one of the Pacific Northwest's least-disturbed major waterfalls. Upper Mesa Falls plunges roughly 114 feet in a wide curtain over a basalt rim, while Lower Mesa Falls cascades through a narrow basalt canyon downstream. The roar is immersive and the mist tangible even from the viewing decks. Visitors walk a short trail through lodgepole pine forest before the canyon opens dramatically. The surrounding Targhee National Forest frames the scene with green ridgelines, and in summer the spray sustains lush moss and fern along the canyon walls. Early morning light catches the mist beautifully, and autumn brings golden aspen contrast. The site is relatively uncrowded compared to more famous Idaho falls, giving it a calm, unhurried feel.
