About this spectacle

Mavericks is one of the world's most legendary big wave surf breaks, located just offshore from Half Moon Bay near Pillar Point in Northern California. During winter swells, waves can tower to extraordinary heights, drawing elite big wave surfers from around the globe. Spectators gather on the bluffs and rocky headland to watch athletes paddle into or tow onto massive walls of moving water, the air carrying the deep percussive boom of waves detonating over the submerged reef. The cold, slate-grey Pacific stretches to the horizon, sea spray hanging in the fog. Even from shore, the scale of the waves is viscerally felt rather than just seen — a rumbling in the chest as each set rolls through. When a great swell arrives, the atmosphere on the headland crackles with tension and awe. Kelp-scented wind, barking sea lions, and the roar of breaking water complete the sensory experience.
