Maria Cristina Falls — Philippines
The 'twin falls' of Mindanao thunder into a deep volcanic gorge — one of the Philippines' most powerful waterfall spectacles.
About this spectacle
Maria Cristina Falls plunges dramatically in two channels over a volcanic basalt cliff in Northern Mindanao, creating a thunderous roar that fills the surrounding canyon. Visitors standing at the viewing area feel the cool mist carried on the breeze, while the sheer power of the water — especially during the wet season — produces a constant low vibration underfoot. The falls drop into the Agus River gorge, and the surrounding lush tropical vegetation frames the twin curtains of white water against dark rock. Light catching the spray in the late morning can produce vivid rainbows. The site is sometimes called the 'twin falls of Mindanao' for its distinctive double-column flow, which shrinks noticeably in the dry season when much of the river is diverted to a hydroelectric facility upstream. Even at reduced flow, the geological drama of the gorge and the persistent roar make the visit worthwhile.
