Mar de nubes — Caldera de Taburiente
A living sea of trade-wind clouds floods La Palma's ancient volcanic caldera from above, with the rim bathed in sunshine while mist churns far below.
About this spectacle
Standing on the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma, you witness one of the Atlantic's most theatrical cloud displays. Trade winds push a white ocean of clouds up the steep volcanic walls, filling the ancient caldera below like a slow-motion flood while you stand above in blazing sunshine. The contrast is absolute: golden light on the rim, a churning sea of white below, and the dark pine forest emerging like islands from the mist. The phenomenon is most dramatic in the morning when temperature inversions are sharpest, creating a clean horizon between cloud and sky. Wind-driven tendrils occasionally spill over the rim and dissolve in the dry air above, giving the spectacle a breathing, living quality. The silence broken only by wind and bird calls amplifies the sense of standing at the edge of another world.
