Maquoketa Caves

About this spectacle

Maquoketa Caves State Park in eastern Iowa offers visitors the rare chance to explore a network of natural limestone caves on foot, ducking through narrow passages and emerging into cathedral-like chambers. Flashlights reveal ancient formations — stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone — while the cool, damp air of the cave interiors provides a striking contrast to the surrounding wooded hillsides. Above ground, sinkholes, bluffs, and forested trails connect the cave entrances, rewarding hikers with an ever-changing landscape of karst topography. The largest cave, Dancehall Cave, is wide enough to walk through upright, while others require crawling and squeezing, adding an adventurous edge to the visit. Birdsong filters through the trees between cave entrances, and in spring and summer wildflowers dot the trail margins.
