About this spectacle

From the Manhangjae mountain pass in South Korea's Taebaek region, visitors witness a dramatic sea of clouds filling the valleys below while the surrounding ridgelines pierce through like islands in a white ocean. On the best mornings, the cloud layer sits perfectly still, glowing soft gold as the sun rises behind distant peaks. The silence is complete except for wind across the exposed pass. This is a dawn phenomenon — arrive in darkness, wait, and watch the landscape transform as mist floods the lowlands. The scene shifts quickly; within an hour the clouds may dissolve or thicken unpredictably. Cool autumn mornings after rain offer the highest probability. Photographers work fast, moving along the ridge to find compositions where mountain silhouettes break the cloud surface.
