Maletsunyane Falls — Lesotho
One of Africa's tallest single-drop waterfalls plunges into a dramatic basalt gorge in the Lesotho highlands, spectacular year-round.
About this spectacle
Maletsunyane Falls is one of Africa's most dramatic single-drop waterfalls, plunging into a deep basalt gorge carved into the Lesotho highlands. Visitors standing at the rim feel the mist rising from far below and hear the thunder of water striking rock echo off sheer canyon walls. The surrounding plateau is carpeted in highland grassland, with panoramic views stretching across the Maluti Mountains. A well-worn path leads to viewpoints above the gorge, and adventurous visitors can descend into the canyon itself. The falls are particularly spectacular during the wet season when water volume surges, sending spray high into the air. In winter, the spray can freeze into dramatic ice formations along the cliff face. The isolation of the site — accessible from the small village of Semonkong — adds to its raw, untamed character, with few crowds and an overwhelming sense of scale.
