Los Hervideros
A volcanic lava coast where Atlantic waves blast through sea caves and blowholes in explosive jets of spray — Lanzarote's most dramatic coastal geology.
About this spectacle
Los Hervideros sits on the volcanic southwest coast of Lanzarote, where the Atlantic Ocean surges into a labyrinth of lava tunnels and sea caves carved by ancient eruptions. When waves push in with force, the sea compresses inside the hollow tubes and explodes upward through blowholes in dramatic jets of white spray, accompanied by deep rumbling and hissing sounds that give the site its name — 'the boiling ones.' Visitors walk along a clifftop path edged by jagged black basalt, peering into blowholes below their feet while the ocean churns through submerged channels. The contrast between the cobalt-blue Atlantic and the jet-black lava is visually striking in any season. Rough weather amplifies the spectacle considerably, sending foam fountains several metres skyward. Even on calmer days the gurgling, sighing rock formations are compelling. The site is open-air and freely accessible along a short coastal walkway.
