Looking Glass Falls

Looking Glass Falls is one of the most accessible and visually striking waterfalls in the southern Appalachians, located in Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina. A wide curtain of water drops over a curved rock face into a clear, shallow pool below, creating a thunderous roar and a fine mist that drifts toward visitors standing on the viewing platform or rocky shoreline. The name is thought to refer to the way ice forms on the surrounding rocks in winter, giving them a mirror-like sheen. In all seasons the falls offer drama: spring snowmelt swells the flow to a roar, summer draws wading visitors to the cool pool, autumn surrounds the scene with vivid foliage, and winter sometimes frames the cascade in ice. The setting is immediate — the falls are visible from the roadside — yet intimate enough that the sound and spray envelop you completely within moments of arrival.
