Lençóis Maranhenses Sand Dunes — Brazil
The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Maranhão state — vast white sand dune fields that flood with crystal-clear freshwater lagoons between the dunes from March through September, the paradoxical combination of desert landscape and clear tropical pools producing a landscape that exists nowhere else on Earth — creates one of South America's most visually extraordinary geographical spectacles. The lagoons' colour (turquoise to deep blue depending on depth), their perfect clarity (spring water filtered through the sand), and their framing by bright white dunes against a blue sky creates an image of completely improbable beauty. The park's most spectacular section between Barreirinhas and Atins — accessible by 4WD across the dune field — produces lagoon fields of several kilometres where swimming in a desert pool while surrounded by sand dunes is simultaneously possible and entirely natural.
About this spectacle
Standing atop a white dune at Lençóis Maranhenses, the view defies expectation: a vast rippling plain of bright sand interrupted by dozens — sometimes hundreds — of still, crystalline lagoons, their colours shifting from pale aquamarine to deep sapphire depending on depth. The silence is enormous, broken only by wind shaping the dune crests. Walking barefoot across warm sand toward a pool feels dreamlike; wading in reveals water of startling clarity, filtered through metres of pure sand. Dawn light rakes across the dune ridges at low angles, casting long shadows and gilding each water surface in gold and pink. The scale is humbling — lagoon fields stretching several kilometres in every direction, the horizon nothing but white sand and sky. Between March and September the pools fill fully; by late July and August they reach their deepest and most vivid. Swimming in the middle of what looks like a desert is the central, irreducible experience here.
