Lençóis Maranhenses Lagoon Season — Maranhão Brazil

The Lençóis Maranhenses — the Maranhão sheets — are 1,500 square kilometres of blindingly white quartz sand dunes rising to 40 metres, with thousands of crystal-clear blue and green freshwater lagoons filling the interdune valleys from June to September following the rainy season. The combination of white sand and vivid blue water is visually extraordinary — lagoons of crystalline freshwater surrounded by pure white dunes under a tropical blue sky with no other colour anywhere in the landscape — and the migratory fish that colonise the lagoons within weeks of their formation, arriving by unknown mechanisms, makes this one of ecology's stranger mysteries. The lagoons range from 1 metre to tens of metres deep; water temperatures are comfortable for swimming; and the visual experience of swimming in an apparently isolated pool of clear blue water between 30-metre white dunes is genuinely unlike anything elsewhere in the natural world. Accessible by 4WD from São Luís.

About this spectacle

Standing between 30-metre white quartz dunes, you look down into a lagoon of crystalline freshwater so clear the sand bottom glows turquoise. The silence is absolute — no trees, no buildings, no sounds but wind and water. The dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses form an otherworldly white sheet stretching to every horizon, interrupted only by thousands of vivid blue and green pools that appear each year after the rainy season. Visitors wade and swim in water that is warm, fresh, and astonishingly clear. The landscape shifts colour hour by hour: brilliant white at midday, gold and rose at low sun, deep shadow pooling in the interdune valleys at dusk. Migratory fish somehow find and colonise these ephemeral lagoons within weeks of their formation — a biological mystery that adds an unexpected dimension to what might otherwise seem purely a visual spectacle. The lagoons are at their fullest and most vivid from June through September. Access requires a 4WD journey from São Luís through remote terrain, and the final approach is typically on foot across the dunes themselves.
