Lake Bled
An emerald alpine lake with a fairytale island church and clifftop castle — one of Europe's most iconic romantic landscapes.
About this spectacle
Lake Bled is a glacial lake in the Julian Alps of northwestern Slovenia, instantly recognizable for the small island church rising from its center and the medieval castle perched on a cliff above the water. Visitors glide across the lake on traditional wooden pletna boats, pulled by oarsmen in a craft unchanged for centuries. The surrounding alps reflect in the emerald-green water, and in calm mornings a mist often hangs low over the surface. In winter the lake occasionally freezes, drawing locals onto the ice. In spring and summer the banks burst with wildflowers, and the castle terrace offers sweeping panoramic views down onto the island and forested shores. The steady sound of the church bell across the water, rung by visiting pilgrims, carries across the glassy lake in the quiet of early morning.
