About this spectacle

Lake Bardawil is a vast shallow saltwater lagoon stretching along the northern Sinai coast, separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a narrow sand barrier. Visitors encounter sweeping vistas of glittering hypersaline water that shifts from pale turquoise to deep blue depending on light and season. The lagoon is a significant stopover for migratory birds travelling between Africa and Europe, and large flocks of flamingos, herons, and wading birds can be seen feeding in the shallows. The surrounding landscape is stark and arid — flat desert meeting water's edge — creating a sense of vast, windswept solitude. Salt-crusted flats and reed beds fringe parts of the shore. The quality of light here, particularly in early morning and at dusk, renders the water surface intensely reflective, making the scene striking for photography. Access is remote and infrastructure is minimal, so visitors typically arrive self-sufficiently and experience the lagoon in near-total quiet.
