Kuang Si Falls — Luang Prabang Laos

Kuang Si Falls is Southeast Asia's most beautiful tiered waterfall — a series of multi-level turquoise and aquamarine limestone pools cascading through subtropical forest just 30 kilometres from the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang. The mineral-rich water colours the terraced pools in shades from pale aquamarine to deep teal, the natural chemistry depositing travertine to create pools of almost surreal clarity and colour. Visitors swim in the upper cascades while the main 60-metre falls thunder below, and resident Asiatic black bears can be observed in an adjacent rescue sanctuary. The easy contrast between the ancient temple city and this vivid forest spectacle makes it one of Southeast Asia's most complete day-trip experiences.

About this spectacle

Kuang Si Falls unfolds in layers — a sequence of travertine-terraced pools glowing in impossible shades of turquoise and teal, fed by mineral-rich springs that deposit calcium carbonate across the limestone shelves. Standing at the base of the main 60-metre cascade, visitors feel the cool mist and hear the low thunder of water plunging through dense subtropical forest. The upper pools are calm enough to swim in, their clarity so extreme that every submerged stone is visible metres below. Butterflies and tropical birds move through the canopy overhead. Beside the forest path leading up from the entrance, a bear rescue sanctuary houses Asiatic black bears that visitors can watch from viewing platforms. Morning light filters through the canopy and catches the water at its most vivid, lending a quality of colour that rewards wide-angle photography. The 30-kilometre drive from Luang Prabang's temple streets makes this a natural complement to the cultural heritage of the city — forest and water after gilded spires.
