Krka Waterfalls
Croatia's Krka National Park cascades over sweeping travertine terraces into vivid turquoise pools — one of Europe's most dramatic freshwater spectacles.
About this spectacle
Krka National Park in Croatia shelters a series of breathtaking travertine waterfalls cascading through a limestone canyon draped in lush Mediterranean vegetation. The centrepiece, Skradinski Buk, spills over a series of broad terraced steps, filling the air with a constant cool mist and the roar of churning white water. Turquoise pools collect between the terraces, their colour shifting with the light from jade to electric blue. Wooden boardwalks thread visitors close to the falls, allowing spray to brush faces and the sound to become almost overwhelming. Swifts arc overhead, and in spring the canyon walls burst with wildflowers. A short boat ride from the entrance village adds to the sense of arrival. The scene is most vivid in spring when snowmelt swells the Krka River to its full force, though summer crowds pack the boardwalks. Autumn strips the vegetation to warm golds and the light becomes softer, making the water's colour even more intense.
