About this spectacle

Standing before the Krimmler Waterfalls at peak snowmelt is an overwhelmingly physical experience. The three-stage cascade drops 380 metres in total, and each tier announces itself before it comes into view — the sound builds from a rumble to a sustained roar that resonates in the chest. The Wasserfallweg trail, 3.5 kilometres long, keeps visitors in close proximity to the falls throughout, moving through beech and spruce forest kept luminously green by perpetual mist. Skin and clothing dampen within minutes of each major tier. On warm afternoons the suspended water droplets catch sunlight and produce multiple simultaneous rainbows arcing across the trail and through the canopy. At 100 cubic metres per second during late May through early July, the lowest tier is especially violent — the noise here makes conversation difficult and spray coats camera lenses. The valley itself, the Krimmler Achental, funnels and amplifies the sound. The morning light enters the gorge at low angles, enhancing rainbow visibility and softening the harsh contrast around the white water.
