Kodachrome Basin
A surreal Utah desert basin filled with towering sandstone spires rising like natural pillars from a colorful canyon floor.
About this spectacle
Kodachrome Basin State Park in southern Utah is a landscape of striking red and white sandstone, punctuated by dozens of tall sedimentary spires rising from the desert floor. These unique geological formations, known as sand pipes, were formed by ancient geysers or springs that hardened into stone over millions of years. Visitors walk among towering monoliths in shades of crimson, orange, and cream, with the high desert sky forming a vivid backdrop. The basin is surrounded by canyon country, offering sweeping panoramic views and a sense of deep geological time. Trails wind through the formations at close range, and the absence of major crowds means the silence is as striking as the scenery. Dawn and dusk bathe the spires in warm light, intensifying the already-vivid palette of colors that gave the basin its name.
