Kitch-iti-kipi Big Spring
Michigan's largest natural spring, where crystal-clear water boils up from the earth year-round and visitors drift over it on a hand-pulled raft.
About this spectacle
Kitch-iti-kipi, known as Michigan's Big Spring, is a remarkable natural pool in the Upper Peninsula where thousands of gallons of crystal-clear water surge upward from the earth every minute. Visitors board a self-operated observation raft and glide over the spring's glassy surface, peering down into the mesmerizing depths where sand boils and dances as water erupts from fissures below. The water holds a constant temperature year-round, keeping the spring ice-free even in the depths of a Michigan winter. Submerged logs and boulders are visible through water of extraordinary clarity, and large brown trout drift lazily in the currents. The surrounding forest of cedar and hardwood frames the vivid blue-green pool, creating a scene of quiet, otherworldly beauty. In winter, the contrast between the steaming open water and the snow-laden trees is especially dramatic.
