Khone Phapheng Falls — Laos
The largest waterfall by volume in Southeast Asia, where the mighty Mekong thunders across a mosaic of rock shelves and jungle islands.
About this spectacle
Khone Phapheng Falls sits at the southern tip of Laos along the Mekong River, near the Cambodian border, and is widely considered the largest waterfall by volume in Southeast Asia. Visitors hear the falls long before they see them — a deep, continuous thunder that grows as wooden walkways and dusty paths lead to viewpoints overlooking the churning white cascades. The river here fragments across a maze of forested islands before plunging over broad rock shelves, generating towering spray clouds that drift in the heat. In the dry season the raw geometry of the falls is most dramatic, with layered rock exposed. In the wet season the full volume unleashes, swallowing the rocks entirely in a brown surge of floodwater. Swallows dart through the mist, and fishing platforms on bamboo stilts cling to the banks nearby, offering a sense of scale against the relentless current.
