Jim Jim Falls — Australia
A towering plunge waterfall dropping from the Arnhem Land Escarpment into a remote gorge — one of Australia's most dramatic and hard-won natural rewards.
About this spectacle
Jim Jim Falls plunges off the Arnhem Land Escarpment in Kakadu National Park, dropping into a deep plunge pool surrounded by sheer sandstone cliffs and monsoon forest. During the wet season, the falls roar with the full force of tropical rains, sending mist across the gorge floor. In the dry season, the flow reduces dramatically — sometimes ceasing entirely — but the gorge walls, Aboriginal rock art, and the boulder-strewn pool below remain compelling. Reaching the falls requires a 4WD track followed by a rocky scramble through boulders and a short swim, making the arrival all the more dramatic. The air is thick with humidity, birdcalls echo off the cliffs, and the silence of the ancient landscape is palpable once the journey ends.
