Jameos del Agua
A volcanic lava-tube on Lanzarote harboring a hidden sea lagoon home to the world's only population of blind albino cave crabs.
About this spectacle
Jameos del Agua is a dramatic lava tube on Lanzarote's northeastern coast, formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. As visitors descend into the tunnel, the air grows cool and damp, carrying the faint smell of the sea. At the heart of the experience lies a subterranean lagoon — a pool of brackish water connected to the Atlantic Ocean through submerged lava passages. Here, in near-total darkness, lives the jameito, a tiny blind albino crab (Munidopsis polymorpha) found nowhere else on Earth. The contrast is stark: pale creatures drifting silently through crystal-clear water beneath ancient black basalt. Beyond the lagoon, the cave opens into a surreal auditorium carved from the rock, used for concerts and cultural events. The interplay of light on water, the unearthly stillness, and the knowledge that you are inside a volcanic conduit that once carried molten rock create a quietly extraordinary sensory experience.
