Jägala Waterfall — Estonia
Estonia's widest waterfall, stunning in all seasons — spectacular as a frozen ice curtain in winter and a roaring spring surge after snowmelt.
About this spectacle
Jägala Waterfall is Estonia's widest natural waterfall, where the Jägala River spills over a limestone ledge in a broad, shallow curtain before rushing toward the Baltic Sea. In winter, the cascade partially or fully freezes into dramatic ice formations — thick blue-green columns, fringed ice curtains, and frozen spray fans that transform the site into an open-air ice sculpture gallery. Spring thaw brings a dramatic surge of snowmelt that sends roaring white water across the full width of the ledge. Summer visitors find a gentler, more translucent flow catching the long northern light. The sound of water over rock carries through the surrounding boreal forest, and mist softens the air near the brink. Because the waterfall sits just a short drive from Tallinn, it sees a steady stream of day-trippers, yet the setting retains a genuinely wild feel. Limestone steps and river banks invite exploration at the water's edge.
