Ilulissat Icefjord
Aurora borealis blazes over a fjord crowded with cathedral-sized icebergs in the Arctic Circle — a celestial and glacial spectacle unlike anywhere else on Earth.
About this spectacle
Ilulissat Icefjord in western Greenland is one of the most dramatic frozen landscapes on Earth. Massive icebergs calved from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier drift slowly through the fjord, some towering dozens of metres above the waterline. The constant groaning and cracking of ice creates an otherworldly soundscape. In winter, the sky above the fjord can blaze with aurora borealis, painting the dark heavens green and violet over luminous white bergs. The site sits above the Arctic Circle, meaning visitors experience polar nights in winter and the midnight sun in summer. Whether you visit for the celestial displays or simply stand at the rim of the fjord watching colossal ice formations drift toward the sea, the scale and silence are humbling. The landscape shifts with each hour as light and ice move in concert.
