Iceberg Lake Glacier

About this spectacle

Iceberg Lake in Glacier National Park, Montana, is one of North America's most striking alpine spectacles. Even in the height of summer, the lake's deep blue waters are dotted with floating icebergs calved from the surrounding cirque walls — a surreal sight at relatively accessible elevation. The bowl-shaped basin traps snow and ice year-round, keeping the lake frozen well into July. When the bergs finally emerge, they drift silently across the mirror-like surface, framed by sheer cliffs rising hundreds of feet overhead. The hike in is rewarded by a dramatic reveal as the teal-blue lake suddenly appears around the final bend of the trail. Wildlife including mountain goats and grizzly bears may be spotted on the surrounding slopes. The air is cool and crisp even in August, and the scale of the surrounding headwall creates an atmosphere of genuine alpine grandeur.
