Iao Valley Needle
A soaring volcanic pinnacle draped in emerald jungle, rising dramatically from Maui's misty Iao Valley — one of Hawaii's most iconic natural landmarks.
About this spectacle
Rising sharply from the lush floor of Iao Valley, the Iao Needle is a dramatic green-cloaked rock pinnacle that juts nearly vertically into the misty Maui sky. Visitors walk paved paths through dense tropical vegetation — ti plants, ginger, and ferns — while the sound of the Iao Stream fills the air. The Needle itself, a 1,200-foot erosional remnant of an ancient volcanic crater, draws the eye upward through clouds that frequently drift across its summit. The valley is enclosed by steep ridgelines that amplify rainfall and intensify the green saturation of the landscape. The experience is one of intimate enclosure — towering walls pressing close, the air humid and cool, the light soft and diffuse on overcast days. Even on clear mornings, mist clings to the upper reaches of the Needle. It is a short, accessible walk suitable for nearly all visitors, and the visual drama is immediate from the main overlook.
