Hundru Falls — India
One of Jharkhand's tallest waterfalls, where the Subarnarekha River hurls itself off the Chota Nagpur Plateau in a thundering monsoon surge.
About this spectacle
Hundru Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the Chota Nagpur Plateau region of Jharkhand, where the Subarnarekha River plunges over a sheer basalt ledge into a deep gorge below. Visitors stand at the edge and feel the cool mist rising from the churning pool, the roar of the water drowning out the forest around them. The surrounding landscape is lush and green during and after the monsoon, with jungle-clad slopes framing the cascade on all sides. The best views are from the rocky banks near the base, where the scale of the falls becomes fully apparent. During peak flow in late monsoon season, the volume of water is immense and the spray can soak observers standing well back. In the dry season the flow reduces considerably, but the geological drama of the gorge remains compelling. The site is a popular local destination and is accessible by road from Ranchi.
