Hraunfossar Waterfall — Iceland
A ghostly curtain of dozens of spring-fed rivulets seeps from an ancient lava field directly into a vivid glacial river — one of Iceland's most quietly magical waterfall sights.
About this spectacle
Hraunfossar is a breathtaking series of natural springs that emerge directly from the edge of a vast lava field (hraunfossar means 'lava waterfalls' in Icelandic), cascading in dozens of delicate rivulets down into the milky-blue Hvítá river below. Unlike conventional waterfalls fed by streams from above, the water seeps through porous lava rock from the Langjökull glacier many kilometres away, creating a magical curtain of pale turquoise ribbons against dark basalt. Visitors walk along a well-maintained path that hugs the riverbank, giving unobstructed views of the cascades in both directions. The sound is gentle — more a collective whisper than a roar — and the contrast between the silver-grey lava shelf, the vivid cyan water, and the surrounding birch and willow scrub is visually striking. In autumn the foliage turns golden, framing the falls in warm colour. Nearby, the single-arch Barnafoss waterfall adds a more turbulent counterpoint. The site is accessible year-round and rewards visitors in every season, from snow-dusted winter scenes to the lush greens of summer.
