Höllentalklamm

About this spectacle

Höllentalklamm is a dramatic gorge carved through the limestone flanks below the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, near the village of Hammersbach. Visitors walk through a narrow canyon where the torrent of the Hammersbach stream thunders between walls of sheer rock, sometimes only a few metres apart. The path passes through blasted rock tunnels and over iron bridges, with spray from the rushing water cooling the air even on warm summer days. The roar of water echoes off the close-set walls, and shafts of light filter down into the depths. The gorge opens into broader alpine scenery, offering a vivid contrast between the enclosed, dripping passage and the bright mountain landscape beyond. It is a classic Bavarian gorge walk combining geological drama with a sense of adventure accessible to reasonably fit walkers.
