Hohllay Sandstone Hall
A cathedral-like sandstone rock shelter in Luxembourg's Müllerthal forest, where erosion has carved a golden hollow large enough to walk through.
About this spectacle
The Hohllay is a remarkable sandstone rock shelter carved by natural erosion in the forests of Luxembourg near the village of Berdorf. Visitors walk through and beneath massive overhanging sandstone cliffs, entering a cathedral-like hollow where golden and ochre rock walls soar overhead. The interior is cool even in summer, with filtered light playing across the rough-textured stone surfaces. The smell of damp sandstone and moss fills the air, and the acoustics create a hushed, cave-like stillness. Eroded niches and hollows pock the walls, shaped over millennia by wind and water. The site sits within the Müllerthal region, Luxembourg's 'Little Switzerland', where a network of forested trails links similar geological curiosities. The hollow is dramatic enough to feel like a secret chamber hidden within the landscape, rewarding walkers who venture along the boulder-strewn paths.
