Hohenwerfen Salzach Cliffside
A soaring limestone cliff above the Salzach River crowned by Hohenwerfen Castle — one of Austria's most dramatic valley spectacles.
About this spectacle
Rising dramatically above the Salzach River gorge in the Austrian Alps, the Hohenwerfen cliffside offers one of the most striking natural and architectural combinations in the Salzachtal valley. Sheer limestone walls plunge toward the turquoise river below, while the medieval Hohenwerfen Castle crowns the crag overhead. Visitors standing at viewpoints along the valley floor or hiking the surrounding forested ridges experience a layered panorama: rushing glacial waters, vertical rock faces streaked with alpine vegetation, and the castle silhouette against snow-dusted peaks. The air carries pine resin and the distant roar of the river. Raptors — including falconry birds associated with the castle — circle the thermals along the cliff face. Autumn colours ignite the valley walls in orange and gold, while winter brings a stark, icy grandeur to the limestone. The site rewards both a brief roadside stop and a longer exploration of the surrounding trails.
