Hochkonig Peak
A limestone giant above Salzburg offering vast alpine panoramas across the Berchtesgaden Alps and beyond.
About this spectacle
Hochkönig is the highest peak in the Berchtesgaden Alps on the Austrian side, rising above the Salzburg region. Visitors who reach the summit or high ridges are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views across a sea of alpine peaks, glacial cirques, and deep valleys below. The upper plateau is cloaked in karst limestone and snow well into summer, lending the landscape an austere, almost Arctic quality. In clear conditions the view extends to the Dachstein massif and far into Bavaria. The approach through alpine meadows filled with wildflowers in early summer contrasts sharply with the exposed rocky upper terrain. Wind is a near-constant companion near the summit, and the silence between gusts is profound. Autumn brings dramatic light and the first dustings of snow on the high ridges, while winter transforms the whole massif into a remote, ice-sculpted world accessible mainly to experienced mountaineers.
