About this spectacle

The Hoces del Cabriel are a series of dramatic limestone gorges carved by the Cabriel River through the interior of eastern Spain, straddling the border between Cuenca and Valencia. Visitors walk along or look down into narrow canyon walls streaked with orange and grey stone, where the turquoise-green river winds through dense riparian forest of willows and poplars. The sound of rushing water echoes off sheer rock faces, and the air carries the scent of wild herbs growing from crevices. Kingfishers, herons, and otters make use of the clean, protected waterway. The gorge landscape shifts dramatically with the seasons — lush and green in spring, bone-dry and sun-bleached in summer, golden in autumn. Access is typically on foot along waymarked riverside trails, offering intimate views of water eroding ancient rock.
