Hintersee / Zauberwald (Ramsau)
Lake plus moss-covered boulder forest from a prehistoric rockfall, in Ramsau.
About this spectacle
Hintersee is a serene alpine lake nestled in Ramsau, Bavaria, its still waters reflecting the surrounding peaks and forested slopes. The adjacent Zauberwald — literally 'magic forest' — owes its otherworldly character to a prehistoric rockfall that left enormous boulders draped in thick, luminous green moss beneath a cathedral canopy of ancient trees. Visitors wander through this boulder-strewn woodland on gentle paths, the air cool and damp, light filtering softly through the branches to illuminate the mossy stones in shades of emerald. The combination of mirror-still lake views and the hushed, primeval atmosphere of the forest makes this one of the most photographically captivating landscapes in the Bavarian Alps. In autumn, golden foliage layers over the green moss; in winter, frost and occasional snow transform the scene entirely. The area rewards slow, contemplative exploration and is especially atmospheric on overcast days when diffuse light enriches the greens.
