About this spectacle

Headlands Dark Sky Park in northern Michigan sits on the shore of Lake Michigan near the Straits of Mackinac, earning designation as one of the few certified International Dark Sky Parks in the United States. On clear nights, visitors are rewarded with an extraordinary canopy of stars rarely visible from populated areas, including the Milky Way arching overhead, naked-eye planets, and meteor showers at their most vivid. The park features open meadows and shoreline vantage points that allow unobstructed 180-degree views of the night sky above the lake. Autumn brings the added possibility of northern lights sightings, as the park's northern latitude increases aurora probability. The sound of Lake Michigan lapping at the shore and the near-total absence of artificial light create a deeply immersive experience. The park maintains designated viewing areas with minimal red-light fixtures to preserve night adaptation. Visitors should bring warm layers, as temperatures drop sharply after dark, especially in spring and autumn.
