Háifoss Waterfall — Iceland
One of Iceland's tallest waterfalls, Háifoss plunges into a volcanic gorge alongside its twin cascade Granni — raw, remote, and unforgettable.
About this spectacle
Háifoss plunges dramatically into a deep, narrow gorge carved by volcanic rock in Iceland's Southern Region, creating one of the island's most visually striking waterfalls. Visitors stand at clifftop viewpoints looking down into the canyon where the falls drop into a churning pool far below, surrounded by basalt walls streaked with mineral colours. The roar of the water fills the gorge even before the falls come into view. The adjacent waterfall Granni adds a second cascade to the scene. The landscape feels raw and elemental — wind-battered moorland gives way suddenly to this dramatic rupture in the earth. In summer, green moss softens the dark rock; in winter, ice formations cling to the canyon walls. The remote location and rough track leading to the site ensure that visitor numbers remain manageable, preserving a genuine sense of wilderness discovery.
