Grey Mare's Tail is a spectacular hanging waterfall in the Scottish Southern Uplands, where the Tail Burn plunges dramatically from Loch Skeen down a steep glaciated valley. Visitors follow a well-worn path uphill through open moorland, with the falls growing louder and more imposing as they approach. The cascade tumbles roughly 60 metres over bare rock into a gorge below, surrounded by heather-clad hillsides and ancient landslide terrain. In autumn the slopes glow russet and gold; in winter, partial freezing creates striking ice formations around the chute. Feral goats are frequently spotted on the crags. The exposed hillside means wind and mist are constant companions, lending the falls a raw, elemental character. The upper path continues to Loch Skeen, rewarding those who push on with a remote mountain loch and panoramic views across the Southern Uplands.
