Green Tree Frog Chorus — Daintree Rainforest Queensland

Australia's Daintree Rainforest — the world's oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest at 180 million years old — erupts in an extraordinary amphibian chorus after the first heavy rains of the wet season in November, as dozens of species of tree frogs converge on temporary pools and creek margins simultaneously. The green tree frog of northern Australia is the world's largest tree frog species, bright emerald with cream-white flanks and a surprisingly deep, resonant croaking call that carries far through the forest. Night walks in the Daintree with a torch reveal frogs on every leaf surface, their eyes reflecting gold in the beam, in a density of biodiversity — accompanied by Boyd's forest dragons, leaf-tailed geckos, and massive stick insects — that makes this Australia's richest nocturnal wildlife walk.

About this spectacle

When the first heavy rains of the wet season arrive in November, the Daintree Rainforest transforms into a living amphitheatre of sound. Dozens of frog species converge on temporary pools and creek margins simultaneously, filling the darkness with overlapping calls — deep resonant croaks, high trills, and rhythmic pulses that layer into an immersive chorus unlike anything in Australia. Bring a torch and sweep it across the undergrowth: pairs of gold eyes reflect back from every leaf surface, stem, and branch. The star of the show is the green tree frog, enormous, slick emerald with cream-white flanks, its call surprisingly deep for an arboreal creature. But this is not a frog walk alone — Boyd's forest dragons cling motionless to tree trunks, leaf-tailed geckos press flat against bark in near-perfect camouflage, and massive stick insects sway gently on low branches. The air is warm and humid, thick with rain-smell and insect sound, and the density of life visible within a single torchlit metre of rainforest floor is breathtaking. This is Australia's richest nocturnal wildlife experience.
