Great Falls of the Potomac
One of the most powerful waterfalls in the eastern US, where the Potomac River explodes through a narrow rocky gorge just minutes from Washington DC.
About this spectacle
At Great Falls, the Potomac River narrows and crashes through a series of jagged rock formations, dropping roughly 20 feet in a thunderous cascade of white water. Standing at the overlooks on either the Maryland or Virginia side, visitors feel the spray and vibration through the ground beneath their feet. The roar is immersive — conversation requires raised voices. The gorge below churns with powerful hydraulics, and the contrast between the wide, calm river upstream and the violent chute is dramatic. In spring, snowmelt swells the flow to a breathtaking torrent that can swamp the rocks entirely. In lower-water seasons, exposed boulders and swirling pools create a more textured visual. Herons, osprey, and bald eagles hunt the calmer stretches nearby. Forested trails on both sides offer changing vantage points, and the reddish Piedmont geology adds warm color to the scene.
